笹酒祭り
Kimono-clad women pouring sake are common nightlife fixtures in Japan but on January 23rd at Daianji Temple they serve warm sake from cut bamboo stalks all day. The Koni-e Cancer Prevention Bamboo Sake Festival commemorates Emperor Konin (709-781) who is said to have enjoyed sake and prayer within the bamboo-strewn precincts of Daianji and was known for his compassion for the sick. The ceremony starts around 8AM on festival day with priest-led worship; prayer requests for health and the prevention of cancer; and hot sake to keep guests warm.
