Visit Nara

On a broad street between Gojo Station and the main historic area, Nakako Shoyu is easy to find, with its vivid purple cloth awning and the scent of brewing soy sauce. The family have been making soy sauce and related products for 139 years. The third generation, with their children and grandchildren, currently live and work there. The store front has a range of products, packaged in stylish updates of traditional canvas bags, bottles and jars. If they are not busy, they are happy to show you the brewing process without an appointment. There are narrow stairs and low beams in some places, so exercise caution. Large groups should call before visiting to see the factory. Children are also welcome.
