Visit Nara

While this house isn’t original, it is an accurate replica of a traditional Naramachi machiya townhouse, and one of the few you can visit to see how people lived in town in the Edo era. Run by the local council, Naramachi Koshi-no-Ie (also known as Lattice House), is free to visit. In typical Naramachi style, the house is narrow and deep (local land taxes used to be calculated by the width of the house). Unfortunately, there is little information in English inside the house, but the rooms and garden are pleasant.
