A stay at Kanau Hotel is a rare chance to experience an important cultural property. A self-contained accommodation next to the Nyu river in Gojo is on the grounds of the Horike Residence, which hosted Emperor Godaigo in 1336. The Horike Residence sheltered the emperor on his way south from Kyoto to Yoshino and later served as the palace for emperors Gomurakami, Chokei, and Gokameyama. The accommodation is in a renovated Edo-period house with modern comforts including air conditioning and Wi-Fi. Enjoy meals at the restaurant overlooking the river next to the Horike Residence (also open to non-guests), or cook a casual barbecue meal on the riverbed. Local activities including rafting, trekking, and snowshoeing can be organized by local adventure company Evergreen. Next door, the Kanao no Sato Museum of History and Folklore exhibits treasures from the Horike family from the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries, including armor and artifacts from the emperors.
