A traditional ryokan in Naramachi, Ryokan Matsumae is known for its collection of Buddha carvings and calligraphy by the owners. Rooms are simple and comfortable in traditional style and there are several small gardens and a smoking area within the grounds. Unlike many ryokan, meals are optional, so you can explore the local restaurants if you wish, but the owners can also make vegetarian and vegan meals on request. This ryokan also has a Kyogen school and performance space, teaching this traditional comic theater. You are welcome to experience the performances (and even join in) and translation can be arranged. You can also try calligraphy if you reserve a class in advance.
