Shirukake Festival
汁掛け祭り
This unusual event is held yearly on May 5 at Noguchi Jinja Shrine. Legend has it that a pilgrim once met a beautiful woman but left her to continue his journey. The woman then turned into an enraged serpent. One villager encountered the creature but managed to get away by dousing it with miso soup, an episode that became the origin of the festival. A 14 meter straw effigy of the serpent is carried from house to house to ward off evil and pray for rain and a good harvest.
