The tree-lined gravel path leading to Kairyuouji Temple speaks of an unrestrained nature, a theme carried through at the temple grounds which is a popular site for seasonal flowers, such as cherry blossoms, irises, azaleas and cosmos, among other blooms.

Understated in its design, the temple, which is now renowned for promoting safety when traveling and studying abroad, officially dates back to the 8th century when prayers were chanted for the safe sailing of envoys to and from China.

But it’s the treasures within--specifically, an extraordinarily preserved eleven-faced statue of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy, open for special viewing during spring and autumn, and an intricate five-storied pagoda--that demand attention. Look closely to see the exquisite decoration of the Buddhist statue, her patterned and ornamental clothing a highlight. The four-meter pagoda, meanwhile, is a National Treasure, and conveys production techniques that hark back to the 8th century Tenpyo era.

A pleasant amble from Shin-Omiya Station, Kairyuouji Temple can be experienced in under two hours and is a worthy stop as part of a Nara temple itinerary.
