Shorinji Temple
聖林寺
Like nearby Tanzan Jinja Shrine, Shorinji Temple is connected to the Fujiwara family. Originally built in AD712, the temple burnt down several times and was rebuilt during the Edo period. The temple and gardens are pretty, but the real draw is the gilded eleven-headed Kannon, crafted in the Nara period (8th century); it stands just over 2m tall, with a well-proportioned figure and delicate features. It is sometimes compared to the elegant Venus de Milo.
