Houki-in Temple

法起院

This small temple is just off the main street as you head towards the central shopping area. In autumn, the bright red maples here are very attractive, matching the red cap and bib of the Jizo statue just inside the gate. It is believed this temple served as the retirement home for a prominent monk, Tokudo Shonin, who founded Hasedera Temple (and was rumored to be a deity, Hoki Bosatsu, reborn as a common man). There is a large stone in the temple grounds which is supposed to grant wishes to those who touch it.
