Grave of the Emperors Tenmu and Jito

天武・持統天皇陵

There are a lot of ancient graves around Nara. The earliest ones are often in the form of a kofun, key-shaped burial mounds surrounded by moats. There are also stone-type burial chambers dug into man-made hills like this one. This particular burial chamber is where Emperor Tenmu and his wife Empress Jito were interred. There would have been gold objects as well as the Emperor and Empress' bones inside, but it was robbed in 1235. You can only approach as far as the memorial shrine at the front.
